The Axe that fell...
Nokia Enterprise Solutions has decided to close the Scotts Valley office... and discontinue our two main product lines. Thus, a severe reduction in employees. At first, this was scary news... employment to end Jan 6 - hey, but what about my medical insurance? my paycheck? yikes! baby is on his way... and I've got to find a new job! Well, things took a turn for the better. I've been given the option to accept a transition package, which keeps me employed until July 3. Now that sounds better, but what does it mean for my maternity leave? I had planned to take additional vacation and unpaid time off. The current plan is that my state disability starts on Thanksgiving (4 weeks before due date). Then SDI covers 6 weeks past delivery. Then the Family Leave Act allows another 6 weeks... for a total of 12 weeks after delivery of the baby. That keeps me home during Jan, Feb, March. So, what sort of work will remain in April? I'm releived of duties May 3 (although paid through July 3). After speaking with several levels of management above me (since my boss, boss's boss, and boss's boss's boss are also laid off...) it turns out that there will be very little left to do in April - mostly be on call and answer questions from India (India will maintain the product line with minimal support). So, now this plan sounds pretty good! Hey! I'm getting paid to do nothing! And will get more time home with my newborn son :)
