A Walk in the Park

Saturday... the sun is shining! The sky is blue! What a perfect day for a walk in the park. And... better yet... this weekend is one of two per year, that the White House Gardens are open for tour. We stood in line for tickets (free tickets), to enter the gates and fences and security check (they threw out my crackers... what, I'm going to feed the birds? can't have that!). But, it was well worth it. The views are spectacular, and you really can't get photos like these from the outside of fences across several streets and lawns.

On our way to the White House, we stopped for lunch at Old Ebbot Grill. This is one of the famous places that lots of famous people and politicians plus staff go for a burger. But this is a very fancy burger... or you can get steak or seafood. We sat at the bar and waited for our table to be prepared (20 mins). Meanwhile, we sampled the crab with artichoke dip served with fresh baguette. mmmm... at lunch I had the crab cake, and Jim had a burger.

Well there is too much to write about today... we visited most of the major monuments around the parks today. At the White House garden tour, Barney the President's dog was out playing. The trainer would watch the dog and play with it. Barney was a lot more fun than either Jim or I expected, running about with a ball. Later we walked to the WWII monument, reflecting pool, Lincoln memorial, along the river, Roosevelt memorial, and finally after miles of walking, Jefferson memorial. In front of the Lincoln memorial and along the reflecting pool, a demonstration was staged. Rows of coffins covered in American flags, one for each soldier killed in Iraq... a touching view.

Walking and walking all day made us hungry for dinner just after sunset. We took the metro to Chinatown. Pretty easy to find a place to eat there! We choose one, and had a good meal. They served great drinks too. We tried the Fog Cutter and Scorpin (yes, Scorpin not Scorpion. that's how they wrote and spoke it... Scorpin :)

Good night...
Actually, we've been staying up late watching TV. Neither of us are adjusted to the time change, I guess?
